The History of Strawberry Shortcake
Strawberry Shortcake has been delighting fans for decades. The character was originally created by Barbi Sargent, a freelance artist working for American Greetings. She first appeared on a Valentine’s Day greeting card in 1972-1973, known simply as the “Girl with a Daisy” or “Strawberry Girl.” The card featured her holding a daisy and wearing an orange bonnet with a strawberry print.
Recognizing the popularity of the character, American Greetings asked Sargent to create more cards featuring a strawberry motif. The response was overwhelmingly positive, leading to the development of the Strawberry Shortcake franchise. Muriel Fahrion, an illustrator at American Greetings, designed additional characters for the line, each with their own fruit or dessert-themed name.
In 1979, toy manufacturer Kenner Products licensed Strawberry Shortcake and released the first Strawberry Shortcake doll. The doll featured the character’s signature red hair, freckles, and a bonnet with a strawberry print. It quickly became a hit with children across the United States, leading to the release of related products such as sticker albums, clothing, and even a video game.
The 2003 Revival and Beyond
After a period of waning popularity, Strawberry Shortcake was revived in 2002 with a fresh look and a new animated television series. The franchise received a complete makeover, with new character designs and storylines that appealed to a new generation of fans. Bandai and KellyToy were granted the manufacturing rights for the dolls and toys, and new video games were launched.
In 2006, Playmates Toys took over the manufacturing rights, releasing a line of figurines and a full-length feature film titled “Strawberry Shortcake: The Sweet Dreams Movie.” The franchise continued to evolve, with Hasbro taking over the manufacturing rights in 2009 and releasing new Strawberry Shortcake-themed toys.
In 2015, Iconix Brand Group acquired the rights to Strawberry Shortcake from American Greetings for $105 million. The franchise found a new home under the ownership of DHX Media, which later became WildBrain. The latest animated series, titled “Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City,” premiered on YouTube in 2021, bringing Strawberry Shortcake’s adventures to a new generation of fans.
