What is Cinco de Mayo?

Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla. It is also a day to commemorate Mexican heritage and pride. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become a day to celebrate Mexican culture with food, music, and parties.

Most people think of Cinco de Mayo as a Mexican Independence Day, but it actually isn’t. The real Mexican Independence Day is September 16th, which commemorates when Mexico declared itself independent from Spain in 1810. However, Cinco de Mayo has become a more widely recognized holiday in recent years.

There are many ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Some people prefer to stay home and cook traditional Mexican dishes, while others like to go out and enjoy margaritas and tacos. No matter how you choose to celebrate, make sure you do it with Cuervo® Margaritas!

The History of Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The holiday has become a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage in the United States, where it is observed with parades, fiestas, and, of course, margaritas!

The origins of the margarita are disputed, but one theory suggests that it was invented in 1938 by Carlos “Danny” Herrera at his restaurant RanchoLaGorda in Tijuana, Mexico. Herrera created the cocktail for Marjorie King, an American actress who was allergic to all types of alcohol except tequila. Another popular theory credits Francisco “Pancho” Morales with inventing the margarita in Juárez, Mexico in 1941. Morales reportedly used a combination of lime juice, tequila, and ice to create the refreshing drink.

Whatever its true origins, there’s no denying that the margarita is now synonymous with Cinco de Mayo celebrations. So whether you’re hosting a party or attending one, be sure to raise a glass (or two!) of Cuervo® Margaritas to toast this festive occasion.
