Love a good road trip—or just the feeling of unfolding a real paper map? You can still request free state maps by mail from official transportation departments and tourism offices. Some send a folded highway map; others include a travel guide packed with trip-planning ideas.
Below are 17 state-map request options, plus a separate Colorado travel-guide note. We checked the official pages and request routes on September 24, 2026, corrected outdated links, and included what to select so you do not accidentally order a paid map.

How to get free paper maps mailed to you
Pick the states you need. There is no single form that orders this whole list.
Open the official button for each state. Choose the printed map or packet named in that section, not just a PDF download or email newsletter.
Enter your own complete mailing information. Minnesota uses email instead of a shipping form. Review each site’s privacy and communication choices.
Submit once and allow delivery time. Watch for a confirmation if the site provides one, and check the agency’s current availability before making duplicate requests.

01 · MAP + VACATION GUIDE
Free Alabama map by mail
Alabama Tourism offers a printed vacation guide together with an Alabama state highway map. This is a mailed packet, not just an emailed newsletter.
How to request it: Complete the vacation-guide form with your name, email and mailing address. The monthly newsletter is a separate checkbox.
Good to know: U.S. mailing addresses only. Use this guide-request page; the older /subscribe link opens a newsletter signup.
Visit Arizona offers a full-size Arizona state map with its Official State Travel Guide—a handy pair for planning a desert getaway or a scenic drive.
How to request it: Choose the guide-and-state-map packet in the guide options, then complete the delivery form. Optional packet choices add a Parks Passport Card or Rock the Route Card.
Good to know: Choose a printed packet if you want mail delivery, rather than only a digital guide. Confirm the shipping options for your address.
ARDOT lists the 2026 Arkansas State Highway Map and says its paper highway maps are distributed free of charge.
How to request it: Open the official IDrive Arkansas request page and use the Order Online form. Enter your name, requested quantity and full mailing address.
Good to know: If the embedded form will not load, the same page provides postal-request instructions. Sending your own request letter would require your own postage.
Iowa DOT offers a free folded Iowa Transportation Map. Its current maps page links to a dedicated GovOS request form.
How to request it: Use the free folded-map form below. Enter your name, email, mailing address and quantity, then follow the CAPTCHA instructions.
Good to know: The older ia.iowadot.gov order route led to a login screen during our check. This button uses the newer form linked by Iowa DOT. Larger paid maps are separate.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet lists its 2026–2027 Official Highway Map and provides a printed-map request form.
How to request it: Complete the embedded Official Highway Map Request form with your name and mailing address, and choose the number of maps you need.
Good to know: The individual form offers quantities from one to ten. It displayed no payment field when checked; larger requests have separate instructions.
Michigan DOT lists its 2026 State Transportation Map and links to a free state-map mailer.
How to request it: Open the Order a Free State Map form. Complete the contact and mailing fields, choose your country and state or province, and enter the number of maps requested.
Good to know: MDOT limits the number of maps supplied to an individual or organization. Request only the copies you need.
MnDOT offers its 2025 Minnesota State Highway Map free by mail. Unlike most entries here, this request is made by email.
How to request it: Visit the official map page and email maps.and.manual.sales.dot@state.mn.us with your complete mailing address. Include your name and say you would like a printed state highway map.
Good to know: The button opens MnDOT’s official instructions—not an online shipping form. Double-check the address before sending.
Nevada DOT has a dedicated request form for a free Nevada State Highway Map, separate from its paid online map store.
How to request it: Complete the free highway-map request form with your name and shipping address, then follow the CAPTCHA and submission instructions.
Good to know: The form says to put a complete non-U.S. address in the comments field. Follow the current form instructions for your destination.
Visit New Jersey’s free travel-guide page lets you request the official New Jersey state map as its own selection.
How to request it: Check New Jersey State Map: Department of Transportation. Add the travel guide if you also want it, then complete your mailing details and required consent.
Good to know: The linked form is labeled U.S. Orders ONLY. An international-request link is provided separately; do not assume identical availability.
North Dakota DOT directs free road-map requests to North Dakota Tourism. You can choose a highway map alone or a kit with a travel guide.
How to request it: Select North Dakota Map for the map-only option, or Travel Guide Kit for the guide and highway map. Then complete the visitor-information order form.
Good to know: The tourism page says it ships available guides to the U.S. and Canada. Its 2026 travel-guide label should not be confused with the map’s edition.
VDOT offers a printed Official State Transportation Map, and its map resources page lists the 2026 edition.
How to request it: Use the State Transportation Map order form. Enter the quantity, your name, mailing address and email.
Good to know: VDOT’s published order-page notice limits fulfillment to two maps per order. Request one or two and follow any newer limit shown on the form.
West Virginia DOT says its free vacation travel guide includes a West Virginia tourism map. Request the vacation guide through West Virginia Tourism.
How to request it: Complete the free 2026 vacation-guide form with your mailing details. Review the communication consent before submitting.
Good to know: This is the guide’s tourism map—not the separate oversized General Highway State Map, which costs money. The guide form says submission opts you into tourism communications.
WisDOT lists a free folded 2025–2026 Official State Highway Map. Travel Wisconsin’s order page labels the selection 2025 Official State Highway Map.
How to request it: Choose Order below that highway map, then Place Your Order to open the shipping form. Fill in your mailing details and submit your own request.
Good to know: Travel Wisconsin offers free mailing to U.S. addresses and estimates 10–14 days. Unfolded wall maps are separate paid products.
BONUS · GUIDE CONFIRMED, MAP CONTENTS NOT EXPLICIT
Colorado: free travel guide, with a map caveat
CDOT advertises a free Colorado Travel Map, but its order link currently opens Colorado Tourism’s 2026 vacation-guide request form. That form confirms a free printed guide; it does not separately list a paper highway map or offer a map checkbox.
You can request the guide using the button below, but we are not promising a separate map will be included. The form currently offers U.S. and Canadian mailing options.
The main list is for printed maps or packets with a map. Many agencies also provide PDFs, but a download alone does not request a mailed copy. Colorado is separated because its current form explicitly describes a guide, not the separate map.
Are the maps and mailing really free?
These are official free-map or free-guide request options, not offers requiring a purchase from Freebie Mom. Several agencies explicitly confirm free mailing. Select the exact free option described above. If a page asks for payment, stop and check whether you selected a paid wall map, atlas or specialty product instead.
Do I have to live in the state whose map I request?
These are visitor and travel resources, but mailing coverage varies. Alabama and the linked New Jersey form specify U.S. orders; Travel Wisconsin offers free U.S. mailing. Texas lists the U.S., Canada and Mexico, while North Dakota lists the U.S. and Canada. Check the individual form for your address.
How long does it take to receive a free map?
There is no universal delivery window. Travel Wisconsin estimates 10–14 days, and Visit Montana estimates three to four weeks. Order ahead of a trip and use an agency’s digital map while you wait. Freebie Mom does not mail the maps or have access to order status.
Why do some map editions show an older year?
Not every state prints a new map annually. An older edition can still be the version an agency distributes. For example, Oklahoma’s request page currently lists 2023, and Minnesota lists 2025. The year of this article does not change the map edition.
Can I request several maps for a classroom or group?
Follow the agency’s quantity limits and bulk-order instructions. Some forms accept multiple copies, while others restrict fulfillment. Request only what you will use, and do not submit repeated forms to get around a stated limit.
