Massive US Recall: 11.7 Million Pounds of Poultry, Frozen Waffles, and More Pulled Due to Listeria

Get ready to clean out your freezer because the ongoing recall just got even bigger—and it’s not just poultry this time. What started as a poultry recall affecting grocery stores like Walmart, Trader Joe’s, and Aldi has now spread to frozen waffles, pre-packaged meals, and even school lunches. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed on October 17 that the recall now totals 11.7 million pounds of ready-to-eat products contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

This recall impacts a wide range of products from pre-cooked chicken to frozen breakfast items, so if you’ve bought any of these recently, pay attention!

How It All Started

The recall began earlier this month when routine testing by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) detected Listeria in poultry products from BrucePac, a major supplier of pre-cooked meat. Initially, the recall affected about 10 million pounds of ready-to-eat poultry. But just when you thought it couldn’t get worse, it did. On October 17, BrucePac expanded the recall to 11.7 million pounds, adding several more products—including some you wouldn’t expect to be involved, like frozen waffles and pre-made meals sold under well-known brands.

Schools Affected by the Recall

Even schools weren’t spared from this massive recall. BrucePac distributed some of these contaminated poultry products to school lunch programs. While there have been no reports of illness associated with the recall, federal health officials are concerned that these products may still be lingering in freezers at restaurants, schools, and homes.

What Should You Do?

If you have any of the recalled products in your home, the USDA and FSIS recommend that you do not eat them. Instead, throw them away or return them to the store where they were purchased. Consuming products contaminated with Listeria can lead to serious illness, especially for people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and the elderly.

If you have any questions about the recall, you can reach out to BrucePac’s VP of Business Development, Jeff Golangco, at 503-874-3000. You can also contact the USDA’s Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-MPHotline or send an email to MPHotline@usda.gov.
