Millions of Corn Dogs Recalled After Reports of Wood in Batter

A massive food safety alert has just dropped nationwide: roughly 58 million pounds of corn dog and sausage-on-a-stick products are being recalled due to potential contamination with wood fragments. These frozen treats, sold under well-known brands including Jimmy Dean and State Fair, have been distributed across retail stores, school cafeterias, and even to government facilities.

What’s Going On

The problem came to light after multiple customers complained about finding pieces of wood embedded in the batter coating the hot dogs and sausages. To date, at least five injuries have been reported—people claiming to have bitten down on hard shards. In response, the company behind the recall acted quickly, pulling large swaths of product off shelves and issuing a precautionary recall.

The contamination appears to stem from a manufacturing misstep: wooden sticks used in the production process were introduced too early—before the battering stage—allowing fragments to become lodged in the coating. The issue is isolated to a single facility, according to the company.

Which Products Are Affected

Here’s how to tell whether a product in your freezer might be on the recall list:

  • Products labeled Jimmy Dean Pancakes & Sausage on a Stick, State Fair Corn Dogs on a Stick, and similar variants.
  • Packaged between March 17 and September 26, 2025.
  • Carrying establishment numbers “EST-582” or “P-894” printed somewhere on the label.
  • Distributed nationally (to retailers, schools, and institutional buyers).

The recall only targets the affected “stick” items — other products from those brands are not implicated.

What You Should Do Now

  1. Check your freezer — if you spot any of the items above, do not consume them.
  2. Dispose or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
  3. If you experience any pain, injury, or swallowing difficulty after eating one of the recalled items, seek medical attention immediately.
  4. Keep your receipt or packaging, if possible, as manufacturers may require proof for refunds.

Risk Level & Implications

This is being classified as a high-risk recall (sometimes called “Class I”) — meaning there’s a reasonable probability that consuming the contaminated items could cause serious harm. Companies rarely issue a recall at this scale unless the risk is significant.

For the company, this is a major reputational blow. Consumers expect snack foods like corn dogs to be safe and innocuous. A misstep like embedding foreign matter — especially wood — shakes confidence in quality controls.

The silver lining (if there is one) is that the recall is limited to one facility and one batch of products. The company says it’s taking steps to reinforce oversight and prevent any recurrence.

Bottom Line

  • Don’t eat any Jimmy Dean or State Fair corn dogs / sausage-on-a-stick products made between March and September 2025 that bear the EST-582 / P-894 code.
  • Return or throw away suspected items.
  • Get medical help if you feel something sharp or experience discomfort.
