In 1976, Nestle acquired Rowntree’s and took over production of Smarties. Nestle has since expanded the reach of Smarties by making them available in more than 100 countries around the world.
How Smarties are made

The first step is to roast the cocoa beans. This brings out their natural flavor and aroma. Next, the beans are ground into a fine powder called cocoa mass.

To make the actual Smarties candy, chocolate liquor is combined with milk, cream, and other ingredients. The mixture is then passed through rollers to create long sheets of chocolate.
These sheets are cut into small discs called Smarties “coins.” The coins are then placed into special molding trays and cooled. Once they’re solidified, the Smarties are ready to be enjoyed!
